About the show

Every science has a mirror. Step in front of economics' and you'll see a very particular kind of human staring back. Who is he? Where did he come from? And what does the way economists see us tell us about the world we live in? History of Economic Species is a narrative documentary podcast about the economic image of the human being — how it was invented, how it has changed, and why it matters. Over two centuries, economists have understood human behaviour in radically different ways. Each version of the economic man — Homo Economicus — was shaped by the politics, science, and ideological conflicts of its time. And with each version, the policies governing our lives changed too. This podcast tells that story. Not as a textbook. As a journey through the personalities, rivalries, and intellectual battles that built the discipline whose assumptions we all live inside today. Hosted by Ken Earon — educator, independent scholar, and PhD in the history and philosophy of science — History of Economic Species brings the history of economic thought to anyone who has ever wondered: do economists understand people? And if not, what are the consequences?
