The Story of Bhutan: The Hidden Kingdom of the Himalayas — Fexingo History

Nestled in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan—known as Druk Yul, the Land of the Thunder Dragon—is a kingdom that has preserved its sovereignty and culture against staggering odds. This show traces Bhutan's story from its early settlement by Tibetan migrants in the 8th century to the unification under the warrior-monk Ngawang Namgyal, the Zhabdrung Rinpoche, in the 17th century. It examines the dual theocratic and secular governance that persisted for centuries, the isolationist policy that kept European colonizers at bay, and the role of Buddhism in shaping every facet of life. The series explores key moments such as the 1773 British invasion, the Duar War of 1864–65, and the rise of the Wangchuck dynasty under Ugyen Wangchuck in 1907. It delves into Bhutan's unique modernization path: the introduction of television and internet in 1999, the invention of Gross National Happiness as a development philosophy, and the peaceful transition to a constitutional monarchy in 2008. Lucas and Luna guide listeners through the lives of visionary monarchs, the construction of iconic dzongs, the spiritual traditions of the Drukpa Kagyu school, and the challenges of balancing national identity with globalization. Why does Bhutan's concept of happiness matter to the world? What can its careful stewardship of tradition teach us in an era of rapid change? The Hidden Kingdom holds answers that resonate far beyond its borders. #BhutanHistory #HimalayanKingdom #DrukYul #NgawangNamgyal #WangchuckDynasty #GrossNationalHappiness #ZhabdrungRinpoche #DuarWar #DrukpaKagyu #TigersNest #ParoDzong #PunakhaDzong #BuddhistKingdom #SouthAsianHistory #IsolationistHistory #ConstitutionalMonarchy #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
